Francesco Tonelli is a New York-based food photographer whose career in food spans over 30 years as a chef, food stylist, recipe developer, and a culinary arts professor. His meticulous approach to food photography and deep understanding of food and ingredients coupled with a quick eye for beauty and an inventive sense of style has made him a sought-after photographer of Michelin-starred chefs and first-class establishments all over the world as well as well-known commercial clients. When he is not shooting, Francesco can be found tweaking and fixing things in his 4, square ft photography studio or joining a global climate movement. Francesco has a deep knowledge of food and cooking which is invaluable. At Chipotle, we work with quite a few food photographers and stylists and it has been really refreshing to find both of these skill sets in one person. Everything seems to happen so seamlessly and effortlessly while on set.

Meet high-end food photographer Francesco Tonelli, the artist behind the lens with a passion for food. H ow do you teach a former chef a new trick? You give him a camera. This delicious career consists of developing and styling hundreds of dishes for the magazine. We sat down with Tonelli to learn more about the incredible world of high-end food photography and how he has created such a renowned name for himself both in the kitchen and behind the camera with high-profile clients from Michelin-starred chefs to giant culinary brands.

Francesco left his career as a professional chef to become a food photographer, and now brings the eye of a true master to everything he shoots from table to farm and beyond. We Asked: Your work encompasses a wide range of genres — food, architecture, people, cityscapes, farms — do you have any advice for those struggling to achieve a consistency of vision across multiple subjects? The only advice I could give is: try to find a connection with your subject, get excited about it, no matter what it is and try to capture it in the the way your eyes see it. Research possible shooting techniques and tools for your new subject and practice before the real shoot to become familiar outside your usual comfort zone. In all honesty, initially I was uncomfortable stepping outside of my comfort zone, which is food, and although food still remains my number one subject, I enjoy my small adventures outside of it more and more, and have come to love experimenting with new angles, tools and techniques to capture other subjects such as people or interiors. How does that background play into your marketing, pricing and relationships with your clients? I think my background has been the key element to my business. Initially, anything I lacked in experience with photography, I made up for with my experience of the subject I was photographing. My relationship with clients has benefitted greatly from my culinary expertise and credentials, which gave my clients confidence that I would understand their product in a way that went beyond the aesthetic aspects of shape and photography. In my marketing, I have always pointed to the advantage of being a chef and styling my own food.

He pretty much told me that the food was nice-looking, but the photos were horrible, and he offered to help me capture better images by sending a hand-drawn sketch of a small basic set with instructions to build a light source using parchment paper, a table lamp and a wine carton. In addition to its being a relaxing hobby, it provides us with delicious homegrown food to eat and, occasionally, with great looking subjects for our photographs. Ever since I started shooting commercial high-end food photography, I always made sure everyone was greeted with a varied, healthy and indulgent breakfast, every day different and featuring a homemade egg dish with the best farm eggs I was able to source, abundant seasonal fruit, homemade granola, homemade jams, croissants, bread, homemade pastries, freshly squeezed juices, etc. Green CFF9B8.

Often a photographer will bring in a food stylist to prepare the dish and make it look appetizing for the camera.
