Sentendosi minacciato, Cornello ordina al suo sottoposto Clay di uccidere i due, ma l'uomo viene facilmente messo fuori combattimento. Messo alle strette, Cornello scatena contro i fratelli una chimera in forma di leone e il suo pappagallo, accresciuto grazie ai poteri della pietra, ma Edward sconfigge entrambe le creature grazie all'uso del suo automail, il suo braccio e la sua gamba metallici. Dopo aver rivelato che i due avevano tentato di riportare in vita la madre, i fratelli Elric avvertono Rose che risuscitare il suo ragazzo Kain sarebbe risultato in un simile insuccesso. Cornello riesce ad allontanare i due e in seguito mostra a Rose la silhouette di Kain per consolarla. Ordina quindi ai suoi concittadini di attaccare e catturare i fratelli; Ed trasmuta un pezzo di metallo per assomigliare ad Al e si fa catturare. In seguito il ragazzo trasmette con un altoparlante il discorso tra Ed e Cornello, in cui il sacerdote rivela i suoi piani per utilizzare Reole come base per conquistare il Paese. Nel mentre, Lust e Gluttony riescono a salvare i loro interessi a Reole uccidendo Cornello e rimpiazzandolo con una copia impersonata da Envy. In un lungo flashback, che si protrae fino all'episodio 9, viene raccontato il passato dei fratelli Elric. Qualche tempo dopo, i fratelli tentano di riportare in vita la madre con l'alchimia, ma qualcosa va storto e Ed perde la gamba sinistra mentre Al l'intero corpo.
