Zack Snyder's Man of Steel is one of the most divisive comic book movies ever made. Many viewers disliked the film for its depiction of violence and bleak aura. Similarly, many viewers didn't think it was heroic for Superman to snap General Zod's neck or cause significant collateral damage across Smallville and Metropolis. Beneath all the carnage, however, is a solid Clark Kent story about the Kryptonian learning about his heritage and understanding his legacy. Throw in the death of his adopted father Jonathan Kent, and how his wife Martha keeps inspiring Clark to greatness, it is an amazing story of self-discovery. There's no denying Michael Shannon was perfectly cast as General Zod as he delivered an emotive and powerful performance. It's a major reason fans are excited Zod is back in The Flash. Still, despite Shannon's layered portrayal of the iconic Superman villain, Man of Steel made a huge creative error with him after starting off on the right foot with Clark discovering his Kryptonian ancestry. To start with, Clark's journey to becoming Superman had never been done before on the big screen. While his origin was explored on television with Smallville , Tom Welling's Clark Kent never had the chance to rove, or even find a ship with a Genesis Chamber that could have created new Kryptonians. Similarly, the concept of the Kryptonian caste system was equally thought-provoking. But this trajectory of Clark being free to decide his own destiny was ruined by introducing General Zod as a villain too early. If this is Superman's origin story, a lower level villain was needed to help Clark find his footing as a hero and gain experience dealing with threats.

General Dru-Zod of Krypton is one of the rare Superman villains who became much better known after appearing in a movie than from his original endeavors in the comics. Unlike major figures in Superman's rogues' gallery like Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Doomsday, and the Parasite, General Zod used to be a fairly obscure character who mostly popped up trying to get out of the Phantom Zone with his fellow criminals from time to time. Then "Superman II" premiered in , and Terence Stamp's exuberant and slightly campy performance as Zod became one of the highlights of the film. Leading his trio of Kryptonian super-thugs, he infamously broke into the White House and demanded that the president " Kneel before Zod. But as luck would have it, they promptly spent 20 years in the wilderness of comics continuity when all Kryptonians other than Superman were banned from DC Comics following the landmark "Crisis on Infinite Earths" timeline reboot.
