In a tattoo, shading is what creates depth by blending black ink out to skin tone. A tattoo without proper shading techniques will look flat. The three most common tattoo shading techniques are based on the type of movement the tattoo artist makes when putting ink in the skin. Use larger mags to cover a big space. Slow your work speed as well as your tattoo machine speed to really pack the ink into the skin. While you shade a tattoo, don't move from one area to another. Instead, flow with the piece and continually expand the shading of the area you're working on until the piece is filled.

Stipple shading is very different from most other tattoo techniques. You need to make sure that you're using small enough liners to be able to make small punctures in the skin. This voltage is way lower than what you would use for any other technique. You do not want to try to do linework when your machine's running this low. This voltage is on a rotary-style machine. It will be different on a coil machine. For example, an Inkjecta with a super-soft bar on it pictured above will make it easier to get all the smooth transitions needed for this style. If you have a machine that does not run on a super-low voltage, all you have to do is bump the back part of your machine or the actual cam. This should start your machine up.
