Old Mate's Place has been a favourite in Sydney thanks to its hidden entrance, its cosy city rooftop, and its top-tier cocktails these guys invented the Mi Goreng Bloody Mary. Now, the Old Mate's crew has taken on the lease of the basement of the same building—and they have a few special things in store. For now, the basement bar is Ginny's Canoe Club. It's essentially a limited-run pop-up while the team schemes for a full renovation of the space and something "really special", says co-owner Dre Walters. Ginny's is inspired by co-owner Adam Cork's mum Ginny, her generous hospitality and her travels around the world.

Faced with shipment delays on fridges, bar stools, and other accoutrements that make a good bar great, but a space ready to serve drinks, what is a bunch of enterprising bar owners to do? So expect an Indian-inspired interpretation from one of their mates, and a take from Mat Lindsay of Poly and Ester in Sydney. The cocktails will echo that sentiment, and be focused on big flavours and fun times. But the popup will only be there for a short while, before they turn the space into something more permanent. Our prediction?
While a majority of Sydney's bars remain firmly on the street level, Sydneysiders can't get enough of moving their catch-ups either up into the sky or down below the ground with the swath of fantastic rooftop and underground bars opening throughout the city. With new Clarence Street venue Ginny's Canoe Club, the Old Mate's Place team has seemingly cornered both markets, offering both sky-high and subterranean drinks at the same address. Ginny's Canoe Club will just be around for a limited time in the former site of Spawn Point on Clarence Street, as the Old Mate's Place team prepares for the next reincarnation of this space. After experiencing delays on the big plans for the building's basement, the team has created a pop-up venue that brings the energy of Old Mate's downstairs, filling the space with accommodating staff and a playful assortment of knick knacks and antiques. The menu is built around tacos, cocktails and wine.

The pop-up venue has proven to be a hit with locals heading there for post-work drinks in the cool basement bar. The menu is built around small plates, cocktails and wine. Chef Joey Astorgo ex- Cho Cho San and Smalls Deli has helped pull together the selection of delicious numbers, snacks and late-night eats. If you do arrive taco-ready, there are various flavours on offer — jerk mushroom and a fancy take on fish fingers. Accompanying the tacos are Sydney rock oysters with pineapple hot sauce, spanner crab sandwiches, pumpkin tostadas, potato and kimchi quesadillas, Albacore tuna with avocado and nori, and the house special Ginny's mini Cubano sandwich. There's also an after-hours menu that's only available from 10pm — helping to combat Sydney's severe lack of late-night restaurants. Here you'll find highlights from the prepm menu like the mini Cubano, tostadas and quesadillas alongside chips with dip and olives.
