The Google Books Ngram Viewer Google Ngram is a search engine that charts word frequencies from a large corpus of books and thereby allows for the examination of cultural change as it is reflected in books. This paper reviews the literature and serves as a guideline for improving Google Ngram studies by suggesting five methodological procedures suited to increase the reliability of results. In particular, we recommend the use of I different language corpora, II cross-checks on different corpora from the same language, III word inflections, IV synonyms, and V a standardization procedure that accounts for both the influx of data and unequal weights of word frequencies. Further, we outline how to combine these procedures and address the risk of potential biases arising from censorship and propaganda. As an example of the proposed procedures, we examine the cross-cultural expression of religion via religious terms for the years to Special emphasis is placed on the situation during World War II. However, religion re-gains importance during times of crisis such as World War II. By comparing the results obtained through the different methods, we illustrate that applying and particularly combining our suggested procedures increase the reliability of results and prevents authors from deriving wrong assumptions. Further, in a step-by-step example we apply all of these procedures by investigating cross-cultural religious trends over the last century — for cultures whose language is covered by Google Ngram and based on google ngram Latin alphabet. The Google Ngram Viewer or Google Books Ngram Viewer is an online search engine that charts the frequencies of any set of search strings using a yearly count of n -grams found in printed sources published between and [1] [2] [3] [4] in Google 's text corpora in English, Chinese simplified , French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Russian, or Spanish. The program can search for a word or a phrase, including misspellings or gibberish. As of July [update] , the program supports , , and corpora. Commas delimit user-entered search terms, indicating each separate word or phrase to find. As an adjustment for more books having been published during some years, the data are normalized , as a relative level, by the number of books published in each year. Due to limitations on the size of the Ngram database, only matches found in at least 40 books are indexed in the database.
It took Ralph Ellison seven years to write Invisible Man. It took J. Salinger about 10 to write The Catcher in the Rye. Rowling spent at least five years on the first Harry Potter book. Writing with the hope of publishing is always a leap of faith.

The impact of lacking metadata for the measurement of cultural and linguistic change using the Google Ngram data sets—Reconstructing the composition of the German corpus in times of WWII. To address both concerns simultaneously, we propose a new procedure that accounts for data-related trends and gives each word an equal weight. Qualitative Inquiry , 21 2 , — Further, in a step-by-step example we apply all of these procedures by investigating cross-cultural religious trends over the last century — for cultures whose language is covered by Google Ngram and based on a Latin alphabet. Composite analysis In this section, we combine our suggested procedures by using higher frequency words, synonyms, and the standardization procedure that accounts for unequal weights and the influx of data. In contrast, for the American and British English corpora we do not find such a reversal but a constant and significant negative time trend over the whole observation period. Hence, dependent on the investigated language and particularly the topic, it might be helpful to consult several native speakers to suggest additional synonyms or rate the obtained synonyms according to their suitability. For reasons of comparability to previous studies, we focus on 1-grams. In this guideline we present five methodological procedures, a roadmap on how to use them in combination, and a way to check for influences of censorship and propaganda.
