The stakes are raised in the penultimate episode as the fighting pits of Meereen are reopened, Doran comes to a decision and Stannis embraces his destiny. Do not read on unless you have watched season five, episode nine, which airs in the UK on Sky Atlantic on Monday at 9pm. Also please avoid posting spoilers from leaked episodes and from the books. That was me a couple of weeks ago , predicting the exact opposite of what actually came to pass on Sunday as sweet Shireen, the greyscale-afflicted daughter of Stannis and the one thing that made the glowering lord of Dragonstone seem halfway human, was … Oh man. As losses go, this was one of the biggest the show has served up — by the basic standards of human decency, if not necessarily from a narrative logic standpoint. More on that in a minute. Stannis Baratheon, well outfitted and showing signs of a strong moral core to boot, was surging in the North. Stannis, it seemed, was ready to conquer and lead. Dany was not. The desperation and addled thronelust that Stannis showed in committing this despicable act, one that will alienate his most loyal associates he knew to send Davos away before the sacrifice , suggest less a kingly contender than a flailing pretender.

Which just makes it all bad storytelling. There's plenty that Thrones accomplishes that's clearly flashily amazing, but this scene was stealth genius. Sign me up. Or, perhaps she was simply happy that this was happening, as she knew it would put Stannis in a more desperate position than ever before, increasing the likelihood that he would be willing to sacrifice his own daughter, something that Melisandre had suggested a couple episodes back.
