Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise, introduced as the main antagonist of the original Star Wars film [a] although he has less screen time than his iconic subordinate Darth Vader , in which he was played by Peter Cushing. In the film, Tarkin is depicted as a high-ranking officer of the Galactic Empire , placed in charge of the operations on the Death Star , the Empire's moon —sized battle station. He orders the destruction of the planet Alderaan by the station's superlaser, and dies at the end of the film when the Death Star is destroyed by Luke Skywalker. He is also the protagonist of the novel Tarkin , which details the character's backstory and rise to power within the Empire's ranks. In the novel, Tarkin advocates for the Tarkin Doctrine , a military system based on "the threat of force, rather than force itself". His philosophy becomes central to Imperial policy and earns him the position of the first Grand Moff in the Empire.

Valorum wanted to investigate a trade summits, which of course Tarkin did not allow. His loyalty was also tested when Palpatine sent his secret apprentice Count Dooku to see if Tarkin would join the Separatist Alliance, which Tarkin refused, and he remained loyal to the Republic and Palpatine.

This show, however, featured the character as his typical authoritarian self, adding little about him that audiences did not already know. Tarkin's fixation on order and his cold, harsh demeanor are key to his character, but there is more to Tarkin than this , and the lesser-known aspects of the character deserve exploration onscreen.

He took great pleasure in killing innocent people for little or no reason, whether to make examples of them or to assert his authority. Although Tarkin seemingly cared about the welfare of the Galactic Republic , and later the Galactic Empire , he was quite selfish, as everything he did was always for his own ambitions. Even after Palpatine was revealed to be Darth Sidious, the traitor and enemy of the Galactic Republic, he still remained loyal to the latter, whom he had long been a major supporter of. This may have been partly out of spite towards the Jedi, as while Tarkin thought poorly of the Force in general, he hated the Jedi more than the Sith.
