Lexington was founded in June , 17 years before Kentucky became a state in Fincastle County, Virginia. It was the first of many localities in the United States that bear the name of the Massachusetts town. Because walls surrounded it to protect it from the British and Indians, the town at Lexington was also known as Fort Lexington at the time.
