Everyone loves a good urban legend. Well, just like the real world, video games have their own urban legends, like hidden areas that are hard to locate and secret characters that seem to defy all logic. There may not be another video game series that has as many myths and legends as Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto franchise. From paranormal monsters and extraterrestrial threats to hidden items and ominous warnings, players have spent years combing through the maps and codes of these games in an attempt to uncover every last secret in the world of GTA. Some of them haven't quite panned out yet or are hard to verify, but there are a few that are surprisingly real. It took enterprising players recording their findings to prove these myths, so we owe it to them to talk about the wild stuff they found.
Fans of the Grand Theft Auto franchise are debating their favorite myths over the years. Grand Theft Auto games hold many secrets for players to discover, and myths are a small subsection of what Rockstar's games have to offer. Myths were a key part of fan engagement with the Grand Theft Auto franchise, predominantly in the mid-to-late s when gaming culture on the internet was really beginning to take off. This led to a variety of urban legends that would often come with a grainy picture taken on a mobile phone and were usually impossible to determine whether it was real or fake. It added another layer of fun to the games, with many spending hours with friends trying to find hints of something that may or may not exist. The myth became so widespread that Rockstar would eventually reference it, allowing players to play as Bigfoot in GTA Online. Another myth that features a lot in the thread is GTA 4 's Ratman, which to this day has never been proven to be true or false either way. A big part of the reason these myths take off is the abundance of Easter eggs found in Grand Theft Auto games. Just last year, players discovered a Liberty City Easter egg in GTA Online nine years after its initial release, so there are always new things being found.

Myths are a collection of recorded creatures and strange occurrences that are said to be within the Grand Theft Auto series. Myths still remain as a large part of what makes up the GTA fanbase. These went on to become retro myths in the time ahead. GTA San Andreas pioneered what probably is the largest collection of myths and legends in any GTA game, or any video game for that matter, to date. The game's sprawling dark forests, seemingly endless wilderness, and huge wild desert was the perfect combination to hide some of the most bizarre and scary things that have ever been hypothesized in gaming. Even before the release of the game, magazines and internet forums spread rumors of Bigfoot , Leatherface , Mothman , and UFOs appearing as Easter eggs. Bigfoot was the first major myth discovered and was the result of endless exploration and hunting through all the large forests that were included in the game. The Bigfoot mystery eventually became so popular that it may have overshadowed other elements of the game. GTA fan forums blew up in popularity to discuss myths, and gaming magazines even offered monetary prizes to any player that could snap a photo of the beast. Suddenly, it was no longer just a game about crimes but involved something surreal.
