He completed the whole set by 2 April , but they were at first published individually: the first and the third in , the second in The work's unusual title comes from the French form of gymnopaedia , the ancient Greek word for an annual festival where young men danced naked — or perhaps simply unarmed. The source of the title has been a subject of debate. Slanting and shadow-cutting a bursting stream Trickled in gusts of gold on the shiny flagstone Where the amber atoms in the fire gleaming Mingled their sarabande with the gymnopaedia. However, it remains uncertain whether the poem was composed before the music. As a whole, the three pieces were published in These short, atmospheric pieces are written in 3 4 time, with each sharing a common theme and structure. Contamine de Latour that was published in a magazine alongside the music:. The melody is a single, flowing line of quarter notes, raising and lowering like ocean waves. The rhythms are long and sustained, creating a sense of floating through time. Notice how the F stays on top of both chords. Today Erik Satie is often viewed as a curious eccentric composer who wrote some pleasant piano pieces that have now become somewhat overplayed. He was born in Honfleur, France, in and when only four years old his family moved to Paris in order for his Father to take up a new job as a translator. Satie received organ lessons whilst living with his Grandparents perhaps in order to formalise his musical skills but they do not seem to have helped the young musician very much. In , Satie was able to join the formidable classes at The Paris Conservatoire having moved back to be with his Father following the death of his Grandmother the year earlier. This was to be a memorable experience for the young composer but not an altogether positive one. His tutors at the Conservatoire were reported to have passed comments about him that were nothing short of rude and extremely unhelpful to a developing musician. Needless to say, Satie did not remain at the Conservatoire very long and returned to Paris where he began to publish Salon music for piano.
