I like scooters. Sometimes you just need a loaf of bread and a lotto scratcher. What kind of scooter would I want? Well, it would have to be inexpensive, reliable, and cheap to maintain, because who wants to spend money maintaining a scooter? Not me. It would also have to have enough guts to keep up with angry moms in minivans so I could lane-split without getting run over. It better have good storage: that means a bag hook on the front leg shield for the manpurse, enough room for a full-face helmet under the seat, and a luggage rack so you can bolt on a trunk. Oh, and I like to ride small scoots balls-to-the-walls, so we best have some decent brakes, something many smaller scoots lack. I had low expectations of the Honda Elite Small Honda scooters seem militantly proud of their lack of performance, in the way unattractive women cultivate facial hair. The Metropolitan and Ruckus 50s have a hard time climbing hills, and if you remember the old Elite 80 you may recall a cramped, slow and nebbishy sort of machine. At the plush Luxe hotel in Brentwood ironically located west of Westwood and probably visited frequently by Clint Eastwood , Honda communications man Jon Seidel gave us the scoop on a new Elite, a new product that will be available in many markets besides the USA. Why a ? Well, Honda already has two 50s for the low end of the market and the new SHi is more a freeway-legal blaster, with the cc Silverwing meeting the needs of the uber-commuter.

With liquid cooling and fuel injection it should run well for a long time in a variety of conditions. Most scooter manufacturers go from 50cc to cc with nothing in between. In other countries, cc sizes are much more common. There are those who claim that the Elite 80 came about to match the power of the 50cc 2-stroke scooters back in the day. And how does zipping around town on a vehicle that gets more than mpg sound to you? We were given nifty cloth maps of the Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica areas and let loose on the streets of L. This bike is maintenance-free. I ride it every day. One time I did ride it in 5 degree weather Jan '15 and had to hit the starter for at least a full minute before it started--but You cannot beat this, and you can't even get close with another bike. It holds a full-face helmet and a half helmet, and rain pants, jacket, gloves, and miscellany, plus whatever you put in the glovebox. Or a full grocery run for 1 person with no issues. It also holds beer just fine, still in the carton. Water-cooled and fuel-injection, you just can't beat that.

I think I get around 95 mpg, is average observed according to fuelly. Easy to handle. Don't know if it's an Elite , but it's a Honda Ruckus. What kind of scooter would I want?
