Shenron's original incarnation in Dragon Boy was a small dragon which emerged from the Human shenron Jewel. When Shenron is summoned, the sky becomes pitch dark, even during daytime. Once he disappears, human shenron, the sky returns to normal. This also holds true for other Eternal Dragons like Porunga.
