The Hyundai Grand i10 was the most attractive package in its segment when it was launched back in September It was priced aggressively, looked smart on the inside, had class-leading interior quality, segment-first features and was backed by a reliable after-sales network. While the Grand i10 was offered with both petrol and diesel powertrains, the diesel motor was not the most powerful in the segment - the only downside in an otherwise brilliant package. The Grand i10 facelift has been launched in India just over three years after the original model - it appears to be better in every respect and takes on a vastly improved competition. But is the refreshed Grand i10 better than before and how does it stack up against rivals such as Maruti Suzuki Ignis? The Hyundai Grand i10 was never exciting to look at, though it was certainly smart. With the facelift, the Grand i10 adheres to the company's new design philosophy.

With the introduction of the Grand i10 Nios, the Grand i10 is positioned as a more affordable alternative to the Swift and Figo, and it also serves the fleet market. It is a practical and functional hatchback with a frugal petrol engine. All in all, the Grand i10 is a well-rounded package and a fuss-free hatch to own. Now, while the Ignis — and no matter how you cut it — is youthful, trendy and a bit peculiar, the Grand i10 is more staid and non-polarising. As part of the upgrade the Grand does get some styling tweaks; the front bumper is sportier and gets LED DRLs, the rear bumper now has a slab of additional black cladding along with large round reflectors, and the alloy wheel design is new too. Hyundai has, however, made a bigger change to the drivetrain. The petrol is essentially unchanged — four-cylinder, cc, and 83bhp engine mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Hyundai does claim that the petrol-powered car is now more efficient though. The diesel engine in the meantime has grown.

Hyundai has given its supermini a sporty makeover, but it has excellent rivals at this price point. Darren Cassey finds out how it stacks up. When Hyundai launched its performance N brand a few years back with the i30 N, the industry was shocked that the South Korean firm had burst onto the scene with a genuine best-in-class contender. The branding might be young, but Hyundai is clearly keen to make it well known, because it launched a performance-inspired N Line trim level. Its biggest problem, though, is the almost-identically priced Volkswagen Up GTI, which has decades of performance branding heritage and a fantastically punchy motor. The i10 has a tough fight on its hands. As part of the N Line upgrade the i10 gets plenty of interior and exterior styling and equipment upgrades, as well as chassis tweaks to give the car a sportier edge. On this point, there is an increased spring rate, longer rear bump stops, and new rear shock absorbers to help with handling. The key change is the 1.
