Plastics are pervasive in our societies and the environment. We cannot avoid using them, and we cannot avoid being exposed to them. Today, plastics pollution has rapidly become one of the most pressing environmental threats to the people and the planet. Chemicals in plastics have been linked to cancer, developmental delays, reproductive health problems, and more. With increasing plastics production, we are facing irreversible risks to our health and the planet. Vulnerable communities around the world who live near plastic production and waste disposal sites experience an unequal burden of the health impacts from toxic plastics. A global process to create a Plastics Treaty is underway, to address the plastic pollution crisis, including the health and environmental threats from toxic chemicals throughout the plastics life cycle. Plastics are made from fossil fuels oil and gas with a mix of chemicals. To solve the plastics problem, we must address all plastics and put the responsibility for reducing production on the source of the problem, the fossil fuel industry, not on consumers. Chemicals in plastics have been linked to cancer, brain damage, infertility, and other serious conditions. When plastics pollute our bodies and our communities, we lose the opportunity to live healthy, productive lives. We need immediate steps to significantly reduce the production of plastics and a fundamental shift in our materials economy to replace them with safer, sustainable materials that promote a healthy, circular economic future. Toxic threats begin even before plastics are produced, from extraction of the materials used to create plastics. Oil and gas extraction can release toxic air and water pollutants, posing health threats to nearby communities — disproportionally impacting low-income communities of color in the U.
Why does using IPEN measures and methods matter?
The purpose of IPEN is to bring together developers and data protection experts with a technical background from different areas in order to launch and support projects that build privacy into everyday tools and develop new tools that can effectively protect and enhance our privacy. It supports engineers working on re- usable building blocks, design patterns and other tools for selected internet use cases where privacy is at stake. It builds bridges with privacy and data protection experts from other discipliners and promotes wider understanding of the technologies enabling the protection of personal data. It facilitates exchanges to coordinate work and aims to create a community pursuing common objectives, by connecting existing initiatives, groups and individuals working on privacy engineering. IPEN invites participants from different areas such as regulators, academia, open source and business development, and other individuals who are committed to finding engineering solutions to privacy challenges.
