Bauer, hockey's iconic equipment maker, has bought up rival Mission-Itech Hockey in a deal that brings together the leaders in skates, facemasks, goal equipment and other protective gear. The buyout will lead to "substantial" job cuts at Mission-Itech, said Bauer Hockey chief executive officer and president Kevin Davis, with up to people losing their jobs between now and next May. Bauer Hockey is a "three to four" times larger organization with a larger infrastructure capable of handling many of Mission-Itech's capabilities, Davis explained in an interview yesterday. As well, the companies sell complementary products. Bauer is the leader in skates while Mission-Itech is the leader in facemasks, goal equipment and other protective gear, the company said.
