It is a representation of the whole environment. Knowing the star compass is to understand your environment, and then you work out where your canoe the only instrument fits into that environment. They sailed to Rapanui via Tubuai and Mangareva and then returned via Moorea and Rarotonga to arrive back in Doubtless Bay in the Far North 9 months later on 15 May — completing a journey of over 10, nautical miles 18, km.
