James Kirkup, who has died aged 91, was an extraordinarily prolific writer in many genres. Though perhaps best known as a poet, he was also an accomplished translator of verse, prose and drama, a fine travel writer, a dramatist and an autobiographer of distinction. His varied achievements as a writer have unfortunately been overshadowed, in Britain at least, by an episode in which the publication in of one his poems in Gay News led to the last successful prosecution for blasphemy. Kirkup was born in South Shields, County Durham, the only son of a carpenter. Educated at South Shields high school, he later took a degree in modern languages at Durham University. During the second world war, he was a conscientious objector and worked as an agricultural labourer. Openly homosexual and sometimes deliberately provocative in his behaviour, he found social encounters difficult. He described himself as having an "inborn sense of deep solitude and apartness". After the war he worked - unsuccessfully - as a schoolteacher.
