Following on from his recent foray into Muay Thai , karate instructor Jesse Enkamp is continuing to expand his knowledge of different fighting disciplines in a new video on his YouTube channel. This time, he's taking on mixed martial arts. Specifically, he's throwing himself into a month of training with his brother, Oliver Enkamp, in order to learn as much as he can about different techniques and tactics, before testing his skills in the cage after 30 days with a professional MMA fighter. The first week is all about mastering the basics, including the three main lines of takedown defense: keeping a distance, being able to identify when your opponent is moving in for a takedown, and how to scramble out of a takedown before the opponent can solidify their position. In the second week, Enkamp trains in striking, grappling, and wall work drills. Wall work is not found in other martial arts, Oliver explains, and this is one of the things which makes MMA such a unique sport.

My name is Jesse Enkamp. Although my mom and dad were Karate teachers, they regularly invited other martial arts instructors to help pay the bills. This early exposure provided me with curiosity and respect for all martial arts. As we got older, my brother and I went separate ways. After graduating high school, I moved to Okinawa the birthplace of Karate to study at university and explore the roots of the art. Living in Japan — without family, friends or knowing the language — forced me to grow up fast. This period of my life was a crash-course in self-reliance, grit and social skills. Although the original purpose was to share my own journey, the writings resonated with so many readers that it became a platform for likeminded Karate practitioners around the world. After I came home to Sweden, I was finally selected for the national team after failing 4 times earlier. This was the starting point for me as an athlete, representing my country at international tournaments including the Premier League, Nordic, European and World Championship WKF.

You see, a style just represents a tiny slice of the whole Karate cake. That cake is freaking huge. And very delicious. They think it has some secret ingredient that makes it superior. The rivalry between karate and Muay Thai goes back decades, Enkamp explains. It all began in , when Kenji Kurosaki, a co-founder of the Kyokushin tradition of karate, was defeated in the ring by a Thai boxer. He decided to learn from the experience, and began incorporating Thai boxing fighting styles into his karate. However, a history of fixed matches only led to greater animosity between the two sides.
