Open Monday and Tuesday only for schools and group visits and Wednesday-Friday to the general public from 10 am to 5. Curated by Ben Uri and The Centre for British Photography, Uncharted Streets: Photographers from the Hyman Collection presents five photographers who were born outside the UK but have been central to the development of photography in Britain over the last century. The exhibition takes as its starting point the pioneering work of Kurt Hutton b. Germany and Bill Brandt b. Germany, Each photographer played a pivotal role in bringing European ideas into British culture and stimulated British photographic publications such as Lilliput and Picture Post magazine. It then spotlights the work of Edith Tudor-Hart b. Vienna, who used photography as a vehicle for social change. The exhibition also showcases two of the most eminent figures in contemporary British photography: Charlie Phillips b, Jamaica, is one of the most celebrated documenters of the African-Caribbean community in London, and Markéta Luskačová b. Czechoslovakia, , whose work has been so influential to British photography since the early s. This is a very rare opportunity to see vintage prints by these five photographers. We ask for £5 donation on entry to this educational exhibition towards the costs, from all who can afford. Whether you just want to meander or are looking to research, we have developed 3 different ways you can engage with over exhibitions covering a century of Ben Uri in London.

Eardley repeatedly depicted the children who lived near her Townhead studio in Glasgow. Adult figures rarely appear in her work. Eardley loved the friendliness and community spirit of the area. She took photographs of street life and of children playing, but also worked from life drawings. The children would visit her studio as friends, to play with a box of toys she had, and she was then able to make sketches of them. Eardley's paintings were praised for their honest portrayal of working-class life in Glasgow. She witnessed a difficult period in the history of the city and its surrounding communities when devastating air raids killed many civilians and left large numbers of the population homeless. Later, in the post-war years, she also observed the rapid pace of change, as notorious tenement slums were cleared and the city spread outwards into modern suburbs and newly created satellite towns. In , Eardley rented a room as a studio in Glasgow, and over the following years the local children became her favourite subject. There is also nostalgia for a sense of kinship and belonging that seemed to be disappearing fast as the city was modernised and rebuilt.
