A match is a tool for starting a fire. Typically, matches are made of small wooden sticks or stiff paper. One end is coated with a material that can be ignited by friction generated by striking the match against a suitable surface. The coated end of a match, known as the match "head", consists of a bead of active ingredients and binder , often colored for easier inspection. There are two main types of matches: safety matches, which can be struck only against a specially prepared surface, and strike-anywhere matches, for which any suitably frictional surface can be used.

Matchbox covers in India are as tiny as anywhere else in the world, but stand out for their unexpected, eye-catching imagery, though many of the thousands of designs created over decades have no real meaning. But besides appealing to collectors, matchbox art is also recently enjoying a more commercial kind of fame, based on its quirkiness and kitsch value. The mass-produced art form is now being co-opted by urban designers to make T-shirts, coasters , and even book covers — a visual style to represent local, authentic Indian-ness. How Matchboxes Became a Stand-in for Indian Visual Culture The aesthetics of Indian matchbox covers have seen a resurgence as contemporary artists celebrate the work of designers who still remain largely unknown.
