The Justice Society of America was a war-time group of super-heroes. Decades after the war, they reformed, happily taking the back seat to teams like the Justice League and Teen Titans , and focusing instead of maintaining and nurturing superhero legacy. With it, he intended on manipulating its power to dominate all of Europe. Roosevelt, pressured by Congress to maintain an isolationist stance, refused to openly involve the United States in England's war with Germany. Instead, he selected two "Mystery Men" from a top-secret dossier to use as civilian agents against Hitler's forces — the Flash and the Green Lantern. Summoning both men to a special office in Gotham City , Agent Smythe outlined the nature of their mission and told them to fly to McMurdie Castle in Scotland. McMurdie was the site of a special Nazi operation led by an officer named Major Streicher. Streicher's scientists developed a giant robot, known as the Mordmaschine the Murder Machine. Arriving at the Nazi keep, the Murder Machine proved more powerful than either of the heroes expected and it quickly incapacitated them. Prostrating before the ranks of the German Army, Hitler proudly displayed the captive heroes before the masses. He then used the Spear of Destiny to conjure an army of Norse Valkyrie. The Valkyries were to act as escorts for a prototype long-range bomber that targeted Washington, D.

It first appeared in All Star Comics 3 Winter — , making it the first team of superheroes in comic books. The team was initially popular, but after the popularity of superhero comics waned in the late s, the JSA's adventures ceased with issue 57 of the title March This allowed for annual cross-dimensional team-ups of the teams between and The Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series merged all of the company's various alternate realities into one, placing the JSA as World War II -era predecessors to the company's modern characters. As part of DC Comics' relaunch of its entire line of monthly books an unnamed version of the team appears in the Earth 2 Vol 1 — , Earth 2 World's End — , and Earth 2: Society — Comics' historian Les Daniels noted that: "This was obviously a great notion, since it offered readers a lot of headliners for a dime, and also the fun of watching fan favorites interact". The first JSA story featured the team's first meeting, with a framing sequence for each member telling a story of an individual exploit. In the next issue, the team worked together on a common case, but each story from there on still featured the members individually on a mission involving part of the case, and then banding together in the end to wrap things up. Thus, the Flash was replaced by Johnny Thunder after 6, and Green Lantern left shortly thereafter for the same reason.
