Elevate your top-of-funnel evaluation process.

In the global race for technical talent, companies are on the hunt for ways to speed up and scale the hiring process to snap up the best candidates before their competitors get to them. Today, a company that has built a solution to help with one aspect of that — the interviewing process — is announcing a big round of funding that underscores that demand. Karat plans to use the funding to continue building more technology and data science into its process — both to train and guide the interviewers, and to analyse the interviewing process to improve it in the future. Longer term, it might also look to bring in interviewers, skillsets and data to grow beyond technical hiring. Technical hiring, however, remains a huge market for the startup. The last time we checked in with Karat, COVID was not even on the horizon — it was May — and so the focus on providing tools to get work done virtually were nice rather than essential in the bigger mix. Fast-forward several months and the world has completely changed, and with that so has the world of work.

I've been doing Karat interviews for about three years and it's been incredible for my mental health. The work is extremely flexible and there is nothing to worry about when you're not working I dread deadlines and I'm neurotic enough to never manage a good WLB at a regular SWE gig. The compensation is also pretty good. Hope this helps. Karat represents everything wrong with how we interview in the tech industry. After being in tech for dozens of years and having interviewed and hired hundreds of people, an interview with Karat was one of the experiences that shook me to the core and told me It was time I retired. I don't represent Karat but please reach out to me same gmail as my username , I would love to hear what your thoughts are on a better process. Could you share a bit more about your experience? I totally agree with them. I spoke directly with their CEO who was not interested at all in diversity , but just wanted to make the process "scalable". Here is the problem: The more companies use Karat as a service, the more companies will NEVER get to hire engineers who are unable to pass the karat interview process! I have personally programmed highly complex distributed systems, algorithms, and more, yet I have a disability which makes it difficult if not impossible to pass a karat interview. The karat interview is the gatekeeper to the other companies. Any software engineer that cannot pass the karat format of interview will never be able to get a job at any company that requires a karat interview to begin!!!!!

The company started out sourcing people to conduct interviews by presenting it as a side-gig for working engineers. That is not to say that they are full-time employees of Karat: Bhende confirms that they are all contractors, and all are working in compliance with their local employment laws. That shift in who is running the interview process speaks to the bigger challenge with finding people to conduct technical interviews in-house, and the push to recruit more engineers in general.
