Day 5 of our road trip was probably my favorite. The ruins of Ani Ani Harabeleri in Turkish were something I had no idea existed until about a month before our trip. I had no intention of going through Kars, let alone staying two nights. And I had definitely never heard of these old Armenian ruins in the middle of nowhere, near the border with Armenia. Eastern Turkey is not somewhere that gets a lot of foreign tourists, except for a few adventurous backpackers. Combine that with reduced tourism numbers due to Covid, and we had the place almost to ourselves! Ani was the capital of Bagratid kings of Armenia starting in The Turks sacked it in , it recovered, and then was destroyed by an earthquake in From Kars to Ani is just about a 45 minute drive. Very easy. Ani has a large parking lot, that had only a few cars in it—and only one other car held tourists! The entry area has a bathroom with Western and squat toilets, a tiny cafe that sold only beverages and ice cream bars, and a little but cute and well stocked gift shop. We arrived at and were finished the site at , so plan on about 3 hours to see all of it.
The Citadel Ruins were also great and worth the hike out and up to them. Museum Status. We arrived at and were finished the site atso plan on about 3 hours to see all of it, kars anatolia cafe.

Anatolia Turkish : Anadolu , also known as Asia Minor , [a] is a large peninsula or a region in Turkey , constituting most of its contemporary territory. Geographically, the Anatolian region is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the south, the Aegean Sea to the west, the Turkish Straits to the north-west, and the Black Sea to the north. The eastern and southeastern boundary is either the southeastern and eastern borders of Turkey, [1] or an imprecise line from the Gulf of Iskenderun to the Black Sea. The ancient Anatolian peoples spoke the now-extinct Anatolian languages of the Indo-European language family, which were largely replaced by the Greek language during classical antiquity as well as during the Hellenistic , Roman , and Byzantine periods. The major Anatolian languages included Hittite , Luwian , and Lydian , while other, poorly attested local languages included Phrygian and Mysian. Hurro-Urartian languages were spoken in the southeastern kingdom of Mitanni , while Galatian , a Celtic language , was spoken in Galatia , central Anatolia. The Turkification of Anatolia began under the rule of the Seljuk Empire in the late 11th century, continued under the Ottoman Empire between the late 13th and early 20th centuries, and continues today under the Republic of Turkey. Traditionally, Anatolia is considered to extend in the east to an indefinite line running from the Gulf of Alexandretta to the Black Sea , [9] coterminous with the Anatolian Plateau. This traditional geographical definition is used, for example, in the latest edition of Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary. Vazken Davidian terms the expanded use of "Anatolia" to apply to territory in eastern Turkey that was formerly referred to as Armenia which had a sizeable Armenian population before the Armenian genocide an "ahistorical imposition" and notes that a growing body of literature is uncomfortable with referring to the Ottoman East as "Eastern Anatolia".
