But while this neighbourhood has long been known as a drinking den for weekend revellers — who bar-hop their way along Rue de la Roquette and onto Rue de Lappe — it has also grown up somewhat in recent years. The striking art space, which made a cameo in Emily in Paris look out for it in season one , hosts ever-changing exhibitions featuring large-screen projections of works by the likes of Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Kandinsky for an immersive, 3D art experience. Founders Yukiko Sakka and Sophie Sauvage met while working for esteemed Michelin-starred chef Pierre Gagnaire before opening their Japanese-French patisserie, which also has an excellent selection of cakes and desserts. Make sure to book in advance to snag a table at Jones. French-Filipino sisters Tanya and Katia have looked to their roots to create the highly personal dishes at Le Servan. The seasonal menu is tweaked every day but expect plates such as scallops with a passionfruit and chilli jelly and veal sweetbreads with XO sauce.

Back in April, Erik Hakkinen brought word that his new bar Roquette was coming soon —and with it, a particularly French inventory of spirits, wines, and ciders. Right now the cocktail menu is slightly abbreviated with four tipples thus far: the Chambery negroni is a sunshine-yellow tincture whose assertive bitterness gently mellows as it melts around three big ice cubes; a foundation of apple brandy firmly buoys the Normande old fashioned like a boat crossing the English Channel; others are punched-up versions of classics like the Vesper and Mai Tai at Roquette called Best Vesper and Tai du Mai, respectively. Hakkinen says that by the week's end a few more vetted cocktails should appear on the menu, which will build up to 18 or 20 original house drinks eventually. For now, though, it seems industry bar folk and Zig Zag regulars most of whom knew Hakkinen when he was at the storied Pike Place bar are drinking their way down the list. Food will likewise arrive later, but when it does expect a snacky, Euro-styled menu.

Roquette is a French-inspired cocktail bar, which means they stock and use a great variety of Chartreuse and things like that. But their bartenders also seem to like mezcal as much as I do.
