On an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman.

Set in France in the late 18th century, the film tells the story of a sexual affair between two young women: an aristocrat and a painter commissioned to paint her portrait. It marked Haenel's final film role prior to her retirement from the French film industry in At the end of the eighteenth century, Marianne, a painter, is teaching an art class in France. One of her female students asks her about a painting of hers, which Marianne calls Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. Years previously, Marianne arrives on a distant island in Brittany.

This particular painting, however — of a young woman walking calmly on a beach, the bottom of her dress aflame — is one that Marianne has no intention of exhibiting under any name, as it turns out to have been inspired by a deeply personal memory. The painting will serve a single purpose — to tempt the eye and secure the hand of a wealthy Milanese suitor — and it must be painted under highly unusual conditions. She manages this with a combination of playful wit and intense concentration. From the majesty of the wind-swept coastal vistas to the firelit chiaroscuro of the nighttime interludes, these are pictures that invite not just admiration, but also sustained contemplation. You could say the chief concern of this quietly incandescent, fiercely intelligent movie is for these two naturally aloof women to see each other clearly, to arrive at a place where their perceptions and desires can be freely acknowledged and reciprocated. What makes it a great movie, rather than a list of ideologically correct imperatives, is the specificity and delicacy with which Sciamma has shaped the material — the way each new idea seems to emerge from the love story like a whisper. She sees everyone in this picture whole. There are inspirations aplenty here but no muses.

Ernaux, who is seventy-nine years old, is not well known outside of France, but in her native country she is considered something of a literary lioness, for her stouthearted willingness to mine material from her own life. She has written books about her extramarital affair, the death of her mother, and a brush with breast cancer. In it, she mourns the lack of great works of art that affirm or even depict her experience. Does Sophie feel well enough to get out of bed? The film makes unusually expressive use of costumes without glamorizing its stars: each protagonist appears in a single, simple dress for the majority of the film. The story is told as a flashback. The film is about the erotic, electric connection between women when they find their desire for creative experience fulfilled in each other, but it is equally about the powers of art to validate, preserve, and console after a romance is over. Even without showing men onscreen, Sciamma depicts the myriad ways in which the patriarchy constricts the lives of her female protagonists. There is, from the outset, a sportive tension to the relationship between the two women.
