Lapis Lazuli is one of the most popular characters of the critically acclaimed TV show Steven Universe. And for good reason. She is a very complex character whose origins are still shrouded in mystery. For some of us including myself, we can relate to Lapis very much. There is more to life than being stuck in the past, which the show again shows how it is not always that easy for some people.

After being abandoned by the Homeworld Gems fleeing the Corrupting Light , Lapis would remain in the mirror for thousands of years until she eventually convinced Steven to free her. Once Lapis returned to Homeworld, she was forced back to Earth by Peridot and Jasper , the latter of whom she fused with into Malachite in order to protect Steven. Following Malachite's defeat in " Super Watermelon Island ", Lapis realized she had no choice but to live on Earth after betraying Jasper, subsequently making her an enemy of Homeworld. Lapis decided to live at The Barn with Peridot. At one point , Lapis admits to Steven she enjoyed being Malachite, as it allowed her to take her anger out on someone. However, when Jasper returns soon afterwards, Lapis refuses her offer to become Malachite once again and chooses Steven and healing herself over giving into anger. Lapis formed a strong bond with Peridot during their time living together, until the threat of another war between Earth and Homeworld scared Lapis into fleeing to the Moon, taking the barn with her, but leaving Peridot behind. Steven later found her at the Moon Base and attempted to convince Lapis to return, but she refused out of fear. Lapis returned in " Reunited " and assisted the Crystal Gems in the fight against Blue Diamond , becoming a member of the team in the process.

The three serve as the reinforcements for Steven during the Diamond Days event, and she allows Bismuth to join her and Peridot in the sky by carrying her during attacks. Lapis was initially shown to have a deep-seated distrust of the Crystal Gems, going so far as to warn Steven not to trust them, saying they only cared about Earth and not their kind, referring to their part in the war, whereas she says "I never believed in this place. Perpetual Frowner : When not around Steven , Lapis is stuck with a bitter deadpan face. There has been a lot of toxic and hypocritical moments from a fandom whose show is all about love, peace and healthy relationships bare in mind that have sprouted about.
