Maybe I'm not alone. If they're gonna punish me like a Crystal Gem, I might as well be one, right? You got room for one more?

I'm tired of the blame. That mirror was a prison and fusion was the same! During her alignment with the Gem Homeworld , she was caught in the crossfire of The Rebellion and got poofed by Bismuth. Homeworld mistook her for one of the Crystal Gems and imprisoned her within a magical mirror with the intention of interrogating her about her supposed comrade's whereabouts. After being abandoned by the Homeworld Gems fleeing the Corrupting Light , Lapis would remain in the mirror for thousands of years until she eventually convinced Steven to free her. Once Lapis returned to Homeworld, she was forced back to Earth by Peridot and Jasper , the latter of whom she fused with into Malachite in order to protect Steven. Following Malachite's defeat in " Super Watermelon Island ", Lapis realized she had no choice but to live on Earth after betraying Jasper, subsequently making her an enemy of Homeworld.

Lapis Lazuli is one of the most popular characters of the critically acclaimed TV show Steven Universe. And for good reason. She is a very complex character whose origins are still shrouded in mystery. For some of us including myself, we can relate to Lapis very much. There is more to life than being stuck in the past, which the show again shows how it is not always that easy for some people. Yet as with most popular large fandoms, there is always going to be some rather, well, lousy and often unconstructive criticism among fans. Sometimes it just becomes downright ugly. Steven Universe is no exception. There has been a lot of toxic and hypocritical moments from a fandom whose show is all about love, peace and healthy relationships bare in mind that have sprouted about. Most infamous of these are constant hate shippings and silly arguments over which is the best character or the worse. And Lapis Lazuli is no exception. Lapis Lazuli is one of my favorite characters in the show. In fact, it was actually a few fan art of her that I saw on Tumblr years ago that intrigued me about Steven Universe.

In "Beta", the two appear to be closer, sharing some interest like watching Camp Pining Heartsmaking modern art or "meep morp", lapiz lazuli steven, as they call itand making music to impress their visitors, Steven and Amethyst. She also reveals she had been watching the others via an old Diamond observation device. Sixth Ranger : Once Malachite is defused.

Throughout Steven Universe , Lapis transformed from a trauma survivor trapped on Earth who wanted nothing more than to escape and return to Homeworld, to a Gem on the run confused about her place in the universe and scared of the Diamond Authority, to a full-fledged Crystal Gem willing to do whatever it takes to stand up for her home and for the people she believes in. It's one of the best examples of character development we get throughout a series that's absolutely chock-full of it. Through all that development, there's bound to be a handful of things that even dedicated fans might have missed about her character. Today, we'll be taking a look at ten things that even die-hard fans might not have known about Lapis Lazuli. Lapis is a survivor of some pretty extreme trauma, having been poofed and then mistaken for a Crystal Gem and imprisoned , alone, for thousands of years- all due to a rebellion that she'd been mixed up in, not having wanted anything to do with it. Ever since Steven freed her, she's been slowly working on different ways to cope with her new life and with her own past, both her imprisonment and the horrible things she did prior. One of these coping mechanisms is her rather dark sense of humor, as in the movie after Peridot mentioned that it took her a while to stop trying to kill Steven, a laughing Lapis adds that she's 'still on the fence'.

This is a fact that can be relatively easy to forget, as Steven healed Lapis' cracked gem fairly quickly after she emerged from the mirror, but her cracked gem affected her physical form. We've seen a similar thing happen with Volleyball whose injury refused to heal because of mental trauma despite her actual gem being fine.

Lapis decided to live at The Barn with Peridot.

Story-Breaker Power : When she was first introduced, she was able to manipulate the entire ocean , while her Gem was cracked, with the implication it took a lot of willpower to stay formed. This resulted her being in total distrust of others and she has many episodes of being triggered by painful memories. The three serve as the reinforcements for Steven during the Diamond Days event, and she allows Bismuth to join her and Peridot in the sky by carrying her during attacks. Some of her most impressive feats, like maintaining a tower made from the ocean in "Ocean Gem" and overpowering the other Lapises in "Why So Blue? This makes her transmission in "The Message" all the more heartbreaking — she did manage to get home but found that the Homeworld she left was very different compared to the Homeworld she returned to, and she doesn't feel like she fits in there anymore. Because she's felt worse. In "The Return", she tried to convince Jasper that Steven was just a human and had no connection with the Crystal Gems. Lapis: I'm done being everyone's prisoner! You see while some people actually get the whole point of Lapis Lazuli, there are others that have… Well, missed the whole point. This backfired on her when the others didn't want to do what she wanted, leading her to leave in self-exile and grow increasingly lonely. Nigh-Invulnerability : Not personally, but her water clones are pretty much impossible to stop, being able to simply reform or even duplicate when damaged. After regenerating shortly before the event of " Change Your Mind ", Lapis wears a backless, halter crop tank top that is blue on top and navy on the bottom resembling half a star. However, after un-fusing with Jasper, her attitude changes a bit. When Jasper discovered that Steven has Rose Quartz's power, Lapis begged her not to hurt him, showing that she greatly cares for Steven's well-being.

Lapis Lazulis are Gems who have hydrokinetic abilities and were formerly used to terraform planets for colonies.

To Jasper. Being trapped in a mirror for thousands of years among other things does that to you. While she does return in "Reunited" , it's made clear it's because she couldn't abandon the others and was tired of running, not because she got over any of her issues. Despite being deathly afraid of the Diamonds, it turns out that Lapis' best friend Steven, the one who freed her from a five-thousand-year-long And I Must Scream situation, is a Diamond. In "Chille Tid" , set a fair bit later, she's still in control of the fusion, though it's taking all her concentration to do it. I wish I hadn't done that. After being abandoned by the Homeworld Gems fleeing the Corrupting Light , Lapis would remain in the mirror for thousands of years until she eventually convinced Steven to free her. She's incredibly powerful, but despite that she's also lost and oddly powerless. Lapis Lazuli is one of the most popular characters of the critically acclaimed TV show Steven Universe. However, the suffering of being trapped for over nearly 6, years has changed her deeply. And it also turns out she was right about the Diamonds attacking Earth. Really Fond of Sleeping : "Room for Ruby" reveals that she loves sleeping even though she doesn't need to. Water Is Womanly : Lapis Lazuli is a blue gem with water theming and powers and has a traditionally feminine appearance, with her flowing skirt and dainty build.
