BOTW is the first game in the series to grapple with this directly, but its explanation for Link's silence isn't exactly thorough, and even highlights a major misconception about The Legend of Zelda 's leading Hylian. Link is a name that actually refers to a number of different characters, a result of The Legend of Zelda typically being an anthology series, where each entry is inextricably connected to the others, but don't directly continue the same narrative. There are exceptions, however, including Breath of the Wild 's direct sequel , Tears of the Kingdom. Many Zelda games have a protagonist that's named by the player, but they are all canonically iterations of Link, inheriting the spirit of the hero and destined to grapple with Ganon, the manifestation of Demise's malice, forevermore alongside the mortal descendants of the Goddess Hylia, Princess Zelda's numerous incarnations. Breath of the Wild establishes a unique relationship between it and Tears of the Kingdom 's versions of Link and Zelda. Every Memory cutscene features fully voiced characters, another first for the Zelda series, but Link remains stoic and silent. The Hyrulian Hero has always been known for his short stature, a trait of his that is accentuated when he is pitted against the gigantic Ganondorf and larger-than-life monsters. He is also the main character in all other Zelda games, and in Breath of the Wild, he wakes up after a year sleep and ventures to save Hyrule from Calamity Ganon. He regains some of his memories along the way, revealing that he was friends with Princess Zelda. Link is 17 years old. Link is a teenage boy with golden-blonde hair that is pulled into a small ponytail and falls past his ears and blue eyes. He wears many outfits throughout the course of the game, but is most often pictured in the Champion's Tunic, a blue short-sleeved tunic over a long-sleeved white shirt and pants with boots with multiple belts. He can also wear his classic green tunic and cap, although it is only available with an Amiibo. Link wears many other outfits as well. His ears are pierced with small blue hoops. It's not entirely clear where BotW fits in on the Zelda timeline, although it has been confirmed that it is at the end.
