They're complaining about the fact that this year, the family is too poor for them to get presents. Beth reminds the girls that they may not have presents, but they have each other and their parents. The other girls object that they don't have their father right now — he's away fighting. Since this novel is from , we realize that Mr. March must be a soldier in the Civil War on the Union side. Meg reminds the girls why their mother asked them to give up presents this year — it's going to be a tough winter for everybody, and in wartime people need to make sacrifices at home to support the troops. Jo suggests that each of the girls should spend her dollar apparently this is their allowance on something for herself.

The story begins on Christmas Eve, where the four daughters are gathered in their simple living room lamenting that, this year, they are too poor to have presents on Christmas. Meg is sixteen and quite pretty. She can be vain, especially about her soft, white hands. Jo is fifteen years old, a tomboy with a fierce temper. Jo loves to write stories and plays, which the girls act out. Beth is thirteen and exceptionally quiet, but she loves music and her family. Beth loves music and her family. Amy is the youngest at twelve. She is vain about her appearance and tries to act like a lady, using long words incorrectly. She enjoys drawing and longs to be a famous artist.
They girls dedicate themselves to further self-improvement, with assistance and support from Mother, Father, and their guidebooks.

The story opens in Concord, Massachusetts, just a few days before Christmas in the year The four March girls — motherly Meg age 16 , boyish Jo age 15 , frail yet pious Beth age 13 , and elegant Amy age 12 — live alone with their mother, Mrs. Their father, Mr. March , has volunteered to serve in the Union army as a chaplain, leaving his wife and daughters to fend for themselves in his absence. Though impoverished, the March family is rich in spirit; they are bolstered by their familial love and steered by strong Christian morals. Together, they resolve to read a little from their books each day, and to put the morals they learn into practice. Laurie becomes a fixture at the March household, and old Mr. Laurence befriends the girls and becomes a surrogate grandfather to them.
