When I opened the bag the rocks felt as if the had a waxy coating on them. I'm sticking them in the oven to see if anything burns off of them.

In my opinion, the fish store type natural gravel looks times better than the Lowes "river rock" gravel. The river rock at Lowes and Home Depot is probably ok if you for sure wash it well.
