Much like in the original Frankenstein story: Human beings can only create life in their own imperfect image. Gemma wants to be a good guardian for Cady, even though she doesn't quite know how. While she makes many mistakes, Gemma certainly tries hard to do the right thing; she admits when she's wrong, and she's willing to communicate and learn to prevent making the same mistakes again. This is a woman-driven story, with women occupying the central on-screen roles. Her boss is played by Malaysian actor Ronny Chieng, who offers a counter-stereotypical portrayal. Smaller roles include a mix of people of color, women, and White men.

Originally intended for an R-rating, the film underwent a surprising shift to PG, reportedly influenced by its popularity on TikTok.

This is due to the fact that, following the release of the trailer in , it became an instant favourite of users on social media app TikTok. Scenes from the film, including one that shows M3GAN dancing her way up a corridor, have been widely shared by TikTok subscribers. I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it. I heard it is on the books. But yes, it was way gorier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie. This decision has divided fans, with some complaining that they were denied what they claim would have been a better cinemagoing experience.

The editing is tight and the pacing moves along briskly, maintaining the tension that audiences expect in a horror flick.
