Covering a total area of 38 square kilometres it is one of the largest national parks in the world. The South African side of the park is dominated by two river valleys — the Nossob and the Aob — both of which can be dry for decades and only flow freely after particularly heavy rains. The area itself is characterized by red desert sand dunes and typical Kalahari vegetation. The Kgalagadi is remote and gets very hot in summer. The South African side of the park however has a very good infrastructure of roads, accommodation options and camps — which stock basic snacks, food, water, fuel and in the case of Twee Rivieren, a restaurant too. Visitors should be largely self-sufficient.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a large wildlife preserve and conservation area in southern Africa. A surprisingly complex web of life has adapted to survive in this arid environment, including an all-star cast of large predators. A Transfrontier Park also known as a Peace Park is a park that exists across an international border with no fences in between. The Kgalagadi was the first official transfrontier park in all of Africa! The way it works is that there is a formal agreement made by both countries to manage all areas as one unit according to a streamlined management plan.
