One of the many incredible features of the Mass Effect games is the decisions the player must make that will have a lasting impact on not only the remainder of the game, but potentially the rest of mass effect kaidan or ashley franchise as well. It's this kind of storytelling that has made the franchise have massive replay value.
Saving Ashley Williams or Kaiden Alenko is one of the Mass Effect trilogy's earliest and toughest major decisions, and one many players have been faced with again with the launch of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. The squadmate who survives Mass Effect 1 goes on to make an appearance in Mass Effect 2 , and then return in a more prominent role in the third game. There's plenty of debate among fans as to which of Shepard's human squadmates is worth saving. Some compare Kaiden's utility as a Sentinel to Ashley's as a Solider, with different implications depending on the class the player picked for Shepard. For many Mass Effect: Legendary Edition players, however, the most important part of any decision in the series is how it affects the story. Although the Virmire survivor fulfills a similar role in the narrative regardless of whether Shepard saved Ashley or Kaiden, their unique characterizations have a big impact on the tone rest of the trilogy. For fans struggling to make up their minds, here's how Mass Effect 1 's Virmire survivor shapes the rest of the games.
Mass effect kaidan or ashley
One of the larger choices in the Mass Effect trilogy comes near the end of Mass Effect 1 on the planet Virmire. Players have to choose between leaving either Kaidan or Ashley behind, killing them off for the rest of the trilogy. The Virmire survivor goes on to return as a crewmate and romance option in Mass Effect 3 , meaning that a playthrough of the trilogy can vastly diverge depending on who is saved. For first time Mass Effect players, though, which character is most worth saving? Does Kaidan or Ashley have the better story arc? Kaidan and Ashley are the first two crewmates introduced in the Mass Effect series, and can serve as romance options for a female or male Shepard, respectively. Outside of Liara, this makes them the only available romance choices in Mass Effect 1. Although they don't return to the Normandy in Mass Effect 2 , their romance can still technically be continued and will pick up where it left off when they become companions again in Mass Effect 3. Their somewhat hostile attitude towards Shepard in Mass Effect 2 , thanks to Shepard's partnership with Cerberus throughout the game, tends to make them controversial among many Mass Effect fans. Others criticize their lack of dynamic dialogue; because of the Virmire choice in Mass Effect 1 , Kaidan and Ashley fulfil very similar roles in terms of Mass Effect 's overall storyline. That said, each has a unique story arc. Ashley is arguably the more controversial of the two potential Virmire survivors, if only because of her attitude in Mass Effect 1.

The first Mass Effect set a precedent for the remainder of the original trilogy. Commander Shepard knew by the time they reached Virmire that the decisions they were often forced to make would highly impact the future of the galaxy. When faced with the task of choosing which squadmate was worth saving, there wasn't much time for Shepard to carefully consider the overall impact of that choice. Knowing their lives were on the line, both Kaidan Alenko and Ashley Williams encouraged Shepard to save the other squadmate. As soldiers, they knew what they were signing up for when they joined the Alliance, and sacrificing themselves for the good of the team was all but a requirement. A lot of players have been prompted to choose whichever squadmate they were trying to launch a romance with, knowing if their potential love interest died that's it for the relationship.

These two human crew members are first to join up with Shepard on their epic sci-fi journey, and BioWare wastes little time in reminding you that your choices genuinely matter in this game when it demands you step up and choose one of them to die. It's a choice that echoes throughout the rest of the trilogy, with the character you save ultimately going on to have their own story arc and potential for future romance with players. I've written before about how I truly believe Ashley is the absolute worst , and that I always regretted saving the space bigot and leaving Kaidan to burn. What can I say? I assumed she'd have some kind of redemption arc.

Oct 29, 18, At the very least, it's worth it to save Ashley in at least one Mass Effect playthrough to witness how she grows more trusting and confident over the course of the series. Nov 7, 1, If you have done Ashley previously then do Kaidan in this playthrough. If Kaiden survives and is eventually killed by Shepard during the Cerberus attack on the Citadel , his story comes to an end in a grim reversal of his backstory, where he killed an abusive mentor during his training. If Kaiden died on Virmire, a Galactic News snippet can reveal that the Alenko Memorial Fund was set up in his honor to help children who, like Kaiden, were exposed to element zero and developed biotic powers. In ME2 they treat you like a pile of crap. In Mass Effect 3 , though, he can also be romanced by a male Shepard. He also can help heal squadmates quickly with his Medicine talent, which lowers the cooldown of First-Aid. It was also, happily, really well written and very touching. In ME1 , Kaidan is only available for female Shepard to romance. Don't panic — this isn't the decision point of who lives or dies , so send whoever you like. Aside from combat, consider which character is more in line with Shepard's goals. Ashley is a xenophobe and hypocrite. IMCaprica Member. Kaiden is just a chump. Ashley dying on Virmire is just more interesting for her arc, but then you're stuck with Kaiden for two more games. Schlorgan Banned. You are using an out of date browser.
