The tale was originally a Yomihon that was published in —, [1] and was adapted into a master jiraiya novel that was written by different authors and published in 43 installments from to ; one of its illustrators was woodblock artist Kunisada, master jiraiya.
Famed as a hermit and pervert of stupendous ninja skill, Jiraiya travelled the world in search of knowledge that would help his friends, the various novels he wrote, and, posthumously, the world in its entirety — knowledge that would be passed on to his godson and final student, Naruto Uzumaki. Hiruzen gave them a bell test for the team's first exercise, during which Jiraiya repeatedly fell for Hiruzen's tricks, and for failing to acquire a bell, he was tied to a stump as punishment. Hiruzen encouraged Jiraiya to be more like Orochimaru, but Jiraiya countered that his Transparent Escape Technique was a fair testament to his skills, as he could spy on bathing women without getting caught: Hiruzen offered to accompany him to see if this was true. She nearly killed him when she caught him on one occasion, forcing him to be more discreet about his interests. He started to suspect that one of them, Minato Namikaze , might be the Child of the Prophecy because of his natural genius.

Proclaiming himself to be the "super-pervert", he is known for writing the popular adult fiction book series called Icha Icha which Kakashi is a fan of , in which Naruto refers it as the "naughty novel" and those are considered as young prohibited to read all of Jiraiya's novel books. He is also known as the Toad Sage Gama Sennin , because of his signature toad summonings and his status as a sage, who was prophesied to be destined to teach the Child of the Prophecy who would either bring peace to the world or destroy it entirely. As a child, Jiraiya and his former team-mates Orochimaru and Tsunade, were students of the Third Hokage. Jiraiya's relation with his team practically mirrored that of the future Team 7, with Jiraiya being quite similar to Naruto. After leaving the Third's tutelage, he travelled the world. Jiraiya at some point discovered the residence of the toads, a species he proved to have a natural affinity for. In the anime this is shown to have occurred when he was still the Third's student; after seeing the Third perform the Summoning Technique, Jiraiya tried to use it himself. During his time with the toads, he trained in senjutsu. Once the battle was over, Jiraiya and his team-mates encountered three young orphans from Amegakure. While Orochimaru suggested they kill them to spare them the cruelty of the world, Jiraiya decided to look after them for a while and teach them ninjutsu. During the time he spent with them, Jiraiya grew close to the three children, and even wrote a book that was inspired by one of them, Nagato. Eventually, he left them so that they could pursue their own goals. Although news of their exploits reached him from time to time, he thought them to have died during an undisclosed incident. Jiraiya took particular interest in Minato, taking him as an apprentice, and amongst other things teaching him the Summoning Technique.

Jiraiya, one of the Legendary Sannin , was Naruto Uzumaki's most important mentor and teacher throughout the Naruto series. He not only taught him many jutsu that would end up becoming his signature moves but he also taught him how to hope for the ninja world. Without Jiraiya, Naruto would not have had the same ninja philosophy, and he would have never known a father figure. So, while there were many situations where Jiraiya was not the best role model, he was one of the most influential people in Naruto's life. Also known as the Toad Sage thanks to his toad summoning abilities and the Pervy Sage thanks to his peeping tom tendencies , Jiraiya made his debut in the first season of the Naruto anime series and soon took the titular character under his wing. Unfortunately, Jiraiya and Naruto's happy days together were doomed to end in tragedy. The sixth season of the anime saw Jiraiya depart Konoha for Amegakure aka the Rain Village on a mission to infiltrate the village and investigate the whereabouts of Akatsuki's leader Pain. Jiraiya soon comes face-to-face with Pain and learns the Akatsuki leader is none other than his former mentee Nagato who — like Naruto — he took under his wing and trained. Still, that didn't stop the mentor from putting up one of the best fights in the Naruto Shippuden series. A version of Jiraiya would make his way back to the series, but not in the way fans had hoped. Aiming to better sync his chakra with Naruto's, Boruto meets a Genin Naruto training in the past with Jiraiya. In one of the anime's most entertaining filler arcs, the young ninja team up with the Toad Sage to battle the mischievious Urashiki Otsutsuki.

Jiraiya was also capable of coming up with quick gambits and new strategies in the middle of battle based on his keen observations. Jiraiya was a tall and well-built man in adulthood with fair skin.
