The Oaxaca coast is still pretty unknown to tourists, so you can escape the crowds here and be treated to some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico. My new favorite part of the coast are the adjacent towns of San Agustinillo and Mazunte, Oaxaca. They are so close you can walk between them in 10 minutes, and there are several beautiful beaches to enjoy, lots of good restaurants, dreamy hotels, and a peaceful beach vibe that is hard to find in touristy places. I was told we would see lots of turtles what the area is most known for and most likely dolphins. We saw plenty of both which was amazing in itself. But we were super lucky to see a giant whale as well. It was the right season for it, but I could also tell our guide was great at spotting where they would be. We were able to motor alongside it from a respectful distance but still close enough that it was very awe inspiring for some time. I have never seen a whale in the wild and it was a pretty magical experience. There are lots of guides who offer this tour — you can find them down at the beach where the boats are.

We had a vague plan to spend Day of the Dead in Oaxaca City before heading to the coast to hit up some of the famous Oaxaca beaches. During our time spent in and around Oaxaca City, we kept hearing whispers of this enchanting, laid back hippy haven called Mazunte. In fact the very first guy that we met was a shirtless, shoeless Italian dude walking his two dogs down to the beach. We soon found out that far from being unique, his story was pretty standard here. Just to give you an idea, you could probably walk around the whole place in little more than half an hour.
