After graduating as a silver medallist at the Guildhall School of Music , Parker played with orchestras and chamber groups in London as well as being a key part of The Barrow Poets for whom he provided both original instrumental music and music to accompany the performance of a wide range of poetry spoken or sung by the rest of the band. Parker subsequently concentrated on composing and conducting. The albums, in which the poet recited his own words and the composer conducted a small group of musicians, have continued to be held in high regard by listeners and critics. These and subsequent records, including Captain Beaky and His Band , with words by Jeremy Lloyd , which topped the charts as both a single and album, led to work in television as well as in London West End theatres, where Parker had three musicals produced. Film scores include music for numerous feature-length television films and for new prints of the classic silent films Girl Shy , by Harold Lloyd , and The Blot , a film directed by Lois Weber. Parker worked on several occasions with Victoria Wood , early on in her career. He was also cast as the bandleader of her debut sketch show Wood and Walters.

Phyllis just posted a comment about the music from Midsomer Murders. I did some Google-ing on the internet and found out that the instrument that can be heard is a Theremin. He was a Russian inventor and actually came to the USA as a goodwill ambassador of sorts to show off his invention. As you can see, she never touches the instrument… it is all done with motions of her hands as they move close to an antenna resembling a lightning rod and a hook resembling a dough attachment of a fancy mixer. As I remember from the show, there is a synthesizor of sorts! Reminds me of the VERY old horror movies that used to have that sort of music during the times when we were supposed to be scared, and not notice the fishing line holding up the different flying entities! Holy socks.

It is named after its inventor, Leon Theremin , who patented the device in The instrument's controlling section usually consists of two metal antennas which function not as radio antennas but rather as position sensors. Each antenna forms one half of a capacitor with each of the thereminist's hands as the other half of the capacitor. These antennas capacitively sense the relative position of the hands and control oscillators for frequency with one hand, and amplitude volume with the other.
