Back in March we posted a piece about a reel that generated a lot of comments on Facebook and through direct messages. It seemed a lot of the readers were upset that I had chosen the Zebco Cardinal series as the reel of the decade for the s. Readers wrote in that the French made, Garcia Mitchell series of reels was by far superior to the Swedish reel and how could I think such a dastardly thought. For one, on some of their models the bail went backwards of all other reels. This may not seem like a problem but imagine this.

Grabbed this Garcia Mitchell off eBay with a group of eight other assorted reels. This isn't really a tutorial, but since I usually take pictures when working on a reel, doesn't hurt to post them here. This one was pretty smooth as it was, dirty on the outside, bail worked, but wouldn't close completely sometimes. Brake system was in pretty good shape. Grimy inside the rotor and on the bail trip assembly. Don't know what kind of blue grease this is, but it hadn't hardened or interfered with the operation of the reel. Blue lithium maybe? These have a unique plastic fastener from the rotor to the main housing.

May 21,AM. Sooner or later I'll find the right crank and give the reel a overhaul.

In my youth, I worked at a tackle shop, and we had a big business spooling new line on reels. After spooling up 15 or so spinning reels, you get in a groove. Then someone drops a Mitchel spool on the counter without line or the reel, and now you have a chance of getting it right. It looked like it was designed in the 50s, it was, and the Cardinal looked sleeker and less clunky. Plus, it wound line on the spool the correct way.

This one was pretty smooth as it was, dirty on the outside, bail worked, but wouldn't close completely sometimes. Nice job Hoss. Thanks, Fred! In the future I will be showcasing these annuals as I have every issue from through Deals Forum. I prolly have a parts reel in the tote of Mitchells. I'll check my stash but it won't be until the weekend. They held yards of 8-pound line making them more of a freshwater reel. I'm going to stretch this braided line out that came with the reel, see if there are any weak spots.

Re: Mitchell questions. One of those cheap, crooked-on-the-end awls from Walmart help getting the spring in place. It looked like it was designed in the 50s, it was, and the Cardinal looked sleeker and less clunky. IMHO, the Mitchells seemed, design wise, outdated because they were possibly the best designed reels from the beginning, and great designs and engineering endure. This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Mitchell is notorious for the bail snapping back during casting. Here is some information, Greg — I think I have seen these on eBay occasionally. They struck a very good balance between performance, being user friendly, and being simple to maintain.
