Well after twelve years of trying to harvest a decent peach on an island better suited for cloud-cover, lichen, moss and raindrop cultivation, I have found a peach variety that stands up to such conditions with juicy aplomb: the Nanaimo Peach. The Nanaimo peach is a p each leaf curl resistant variety from Canada. Its namesake island city , three hours to the north on Vancouver Island, shares a similar climate to Vashon Island, Washington, where I live. Nanaimo is also known around these parts for a delicious baked confection born from the kitchens of this harbor city: the Nanaimo bar , a three-layered bar cookie worthy of a swoon or two. Ah but I digress, back to the peach. I planted this Nanaimo peach about five years ago, and like most fruit trees, the first year it slept; the second year it crept; and the third year it leapt.

Well, today Nov 15 OGW put up for pre-order:. I have Nanaimo planted 5 years ago here on the chilly, fog bound coast of far Northern California. I am most certainly in the curl belt. So far, Nanaimo has been my most curl-prone variety despite a couple shots of copper during the dormant season, but my sample size is limited. It did pull through by midsummer and is a thriving vigorous tree. Q has shown potential on the curl front for me, but has a bout of canker going on the trunk, so time will tell, it did manage several quality peaches this summer white flesh. I agree that Nanaimo shows little curl resistance in my wet NW Washington maritime climate. Plenty of curl even with 5 Bordeaux sprays spaced from November to March. I thought the peaches tasted ok though not great. Decided to keep tree.
Self fertile.
One of the great experiences of summer is biting into a freshly harvested juicy, melting, luscious peach. On average, the peach trees we offer are hardy to Zone 5 and have been selected to perform better in northern states and the Pacific Northwest. Most are self-fertile and do not require another tree to produce fruit. Having several varieties can extend the season over several months. Peach blossoms are superb in spring with light to bright vivid pink or white flowers. Harvest should begin only when fruit begins to soften so that full flavor and sweetness is developed.
