Originally having a fatalistic outlook on life due to his being apart of the Hyuga's branch leaguelobster, his perspective was changed by Naruto Uzumaki. Neji had fair skin and long black hair, which the anime usually depicted neji hyuga dark brown.

After experiencing Naruto Uzumaki 's refusal to be limited by such an ideology, Neji realised his fate was what he chose it to be, and as a member of Team Guy he sought the strength necessary to make the future he wanted for his family and friends, and ultimately sacrificed his life to protect the very same person who taught him about the freedom of one's choice of fate, Naruto. When the heiress of the main house, Hinata , turned three years old, Neji's forehead was branded with the customary cursed seal by his uncle, Hiashi. For this reason, Hizashi resented that Neji was marked with a cursed seal, as he felt it bound him to a life of service to the main house when he should be destined for greater things. His anger would often manifest subconsciously, prompting Hiashi to activate Hizashi's cursed seal and punish him with pain, an act that traumatised Neji. Shortly after Neji received his cursed seal, a Kumogakure Head Ninja visiting Konoha took advantage of a peace treaty and attempted to kidnap Hinata in order to gain the secrets of the Byakugan. Hiashi stopped and killed the Head Ninja.

Neji Hyuga is one of the main characters of the Naruto series and he was introduced as a prodigious shinobi during the early parts of the story. His level of skill was known to be fearsome and he kept on getting stronger as the story progressed. Neji had great importance in the Naruto series and he assisted the likes of Naruto Uzumaki and the other main characters right until the very end. The Genin who take part in the Chunin exams are usually allowed to gain a certain level of experience first. Might Guy's students only took part in them after a year of working as Genin. However, Kakashi Hatake's ninja, along with most of the other Jonin's teams, took part in the exams right after becoming Genin.

Initially, he's very confident in his combat capabilities, yet also pessimistic about his fate and place in the world. In a way, he's the opposite of Naruto, who has always been optimistic, despite his reputation as a failure. It's for this reason that they can't see eye to eye until Naruto beats some sense into Neji during the Chunin Exams finals.
