Then after only two games of the new season Dalglish resigned according to the club or was sacked according to the man himself. The first game against newly promoted Charlton saw the team jeered off and Dalglish had lost the support of many fans after the Cup Final. Some may say that the Board's actions were a thinly veiled attempt to regain their popularity amongst the Toon Army. Former Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit was appointed and promised "sexy football", but apart from a couple of spells where three victories in a row were recorded the fans were left somewhat unfulfilled in the Premiership department and the campaign fizzled out into a second successive thirteenth position. Gullit started to remould the side with the most notable signing being that of centre-forward Duncan Ferguson from Everton. With a number of players being sold or loaned out there was a massive turnover in the team and a record equalling 36 players were used in all. The FA Cup once again provided the main highs and lows of the season as United reached the Final again only to fail miserably once more. Whilst all this was going on there was criticism of Gullit's frequent returns to Amsterdam and stories abounded about the Dutchman's deteriorating relationships with a number of his star players including Hamann, Lee, Batty and Shearer. They finished 13th and reached the FA Cup final , losing to Arsenal. During the summer, David Ginola and Les Ferdinand were sold to Tottenham Hotspur , while in a pre-season friendly match, Alan Shearer sustained a horrific ankle injury which would keep him out for half the season. The highlight of the —98 season was to be the club's run in the UEFA Champions League , seeing them defeat Barcelona 3—2 after a hat-trick from striker Faustino Asprilla. Controversy surrounded the club in March when chairman Freddie Shepherd, and deputy chairman Douglas Hall son of previous chairman Sir John Hall , who had retired during the summer , were filmed in a Spanish brothel making a series of remarks to an undercover tabloid journalist. They ridiculed Shearer, boasted of "ripping off" supporters with the club shirts they sold, and called the women of Newcastle "dogs". Both subsequently resigned, and Sir John Hall returned as acting chairman for the remainder of the season. Newcastle enjoyed a good run in the —98 FA Cup and reached the final for the first time in 24 years. They never looked like winners, and the final whistle blew with a 2—0 scoreline giving the trophy to opponents Arsenal.

Newcastle's season was an almost carbon copy of the one before. They finished 13th in the Premiership and lost in the FA Cup final to enter Europe because the winning side had already qualified for the Champions League. Just after the season started, Kenny Dalglish paid for Newcastle's sub-standard league performances with his job. The task was given to Ruud Gullit to turn things round, but he could not improve on the club's previous league finish of 13th. A dismal league position put them below local rivals Middlesbrough as well as other unfancied sides including Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday. A poor start to the —99 season led to Kenny Dalglish being sacked. Gullit made some high-profile mistakes in the transfer market notably, Spanish defender Marcelino and forward Silvio Maric bore the brunt of supporters frustrations. Less forgivably, he also fell out with several senior players, including the club captain Rob Lee , who had been the heartbeat of the team for the previous half decade, and was initially not given a squad number.

Off the pitch, controversy was caused when former chairman Freddy Shepherd , who had been forced to resign due to controversy over remarks made in the press the previous season, successfully manoeuvred to reinstate himself to the position within less than a year.
