High frequency words are the most common words in our language. We use them often in both speech and writing. They can also be called sight words. It is important that children know how to read and spell these words. Children are taught these high frequency words during Letters and Sounds phonics phases 2 to 5. In each phase, a selection of the high frequency words are focussed on, and are split into two groups - decodable words and tricky words. Decodable words are those that sound the way they are spelled or can be sounded out because they have letter-sound relationships already learned. Tricky words are those that have unusual spellings, contain new sounds and graphemes, or don't follow ordinary phonemic rules. Decodable words : a, an, as, at, if, in, is, it, of, off, on, can, dad, had, back, and, get, big, him, his, not, got, up, mum, but, put north.
