Market leading 60x optical zoom and built in Wi-Fi make the P a solid bridge camera, but there are still several improvements Nikon could make. Find out more about how we test. The bridge camera market seems to be relatively buoyant in what is an otherwise declining compact arena. The main advantage of the bridge camera is their incredible zoom range. The P offers a market-leading 60x optical zoom, which puts it in the same bracket at the Panasonic FZ72 and the Sony HXV , both of which also feature a 60x optical zoom. In 35mm terms, the P offers an equivalent of mm, giving it a huge potential reach. There's also a digital zoom functionality, which boosts that by four times to reach an even more impressive mm. Although cameras such as the P have a large body and, in many ways, have the same kind of styling and look as a DSLR, they have a small sensor, the same size as a compact camera so they belong in the compact camera market. The P's predecessor seems to be the P, as although Nikon has since released the P, this has become Nikon's budget bridge camera option and the P has more in common with the P Full manual control is available, although disappointingly, there's no option to shoot in raw format, which may put off some potential enthusiast photographers as it gives less scope for post-production editing.
Enthusiasts might be disappointed by the lack of a hot shoe and raw support.

The P isn't the quickest camera, but that might be a small price to pay for having such a long lens on a relatively compact, lightweight camera. If there's one thing the Nikon Coolpix P has going for it, it's wow factor. Well, at least for birders, stargazers, and anyone else who likes to shoot pictures and movies of distant subjects.

Nikon coolpix p600
The Nikon Coolpix P is a new super-zoom compact camera with a mechanically-stabilized 60x optical zoom that offers a massive focal range of mm. The Nikon P appeals further to the keen photographer with a full range of manual shooting modes, burst shooting at 7fps, point autofocus system, focus peaking, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, electronic viewfinder and a 3-inch K-dot vari-angle RGBW LCD screen. Measuring Like most high-end superzooms, the Nikon P sports a typical bridge camera look, with a chunky hand-grip, large lens barrel, pop-up flash and an eye-level electronic viewfinder. The deep grip is moulded to fit comfortably into your right hand, and is rubberised in a textured material for added comfort. The dominant part of the P is the new 60x zoom lens, which goes from an ultra-wide 24mm to a frankly incredible mm in 35mm terms. Considering that with an SLR camera, you would need at least lenses to cover the same focal range, the single, fixed-mount lens of the Nikon P can be described as remarkably compact, even if it does extend quite a bit when zoomed to full telephoto.

Note that you cannot use the flash in any of the continuous shooting modes. Flash Collapse Flash Built-in flash Range approx. If you want to shoot using the electronic viewfinder, you'll need to press a button just to the right of the EVF, which doesn't make for a very quick and fluid transition between the two. Nikon's smart designers put the stereo microphone on the top of the camera right behind the flash. Effective Pixels Megapixels When conditions require, use the bright, Electronic Eye-Level viewfinder and frame exactly the shot you want. Although the camera is relatively heavy, holding it one-handed feels pretty natural — although you'll probably want to grip it around the lens barrel wit hthe other hand a lot of the time to keep it steady — especially when using the far reaches of the telephoto optic. The handgrip is very pronounced, while a textured grip around it makes it feel very secure in the hand, and also helps to lend the camera a higher air of quality than some of the other cameras in the range, such as the P or the L The noise, colour desaturation and loss of detail gets progressively worse as you go from ISO to ISO and finally the unusable setting. The P has a nice mix of shooting modes, making it a good choice for both snapshooters and those who want a little more control.

The shutter release, zoom lever and power button are in the same locations as on the P, as is the same customisable Function button. In fact the experience of remote shooting and wireless transfer using both models is very similar, though the HXV has NFC so is a better option if you have an NFC-equipped phone and also allows you to transfer full resolution images. Programmed auto exposure with flexible program Aperture-priority auto Exposure bracketing Manual Shutter priority auto Exposure compensation In the Backlighting mode, the P captures three consecutive shots at varying exposures and combines them into a single photo with a broader range of tones. Spend more time capturing special moments and less time waiting for a charge. See full bio. More usefully, a small square in the middle of the frame indicates the area framed when fully zoomed in, so with the camera on a tripod you can frame the moon in the small square then press OK to automatically zoom the lens all the way in. The Nikon Coolpix P's maximum shutter speed is 15 seconds in the Manual mode, which is good news if you're seriously interested in night photography. Things take a turn for the worse at ISO , but really it's above that when details really start to look smeary and colors desaturate.
It is possible to tell, this exception :)
