Crafting a hit song sometimes happens immediately. Sometimes it takes a while longer. John Oates made several attempts at " Maneater " to get the right groove.
Last week, we looked at what had to offer —including anthems and ballads from Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones and Elton John. It was a long list of 27 songs, and that number has greatly shrunk this time around. Eight of the songs held the 1 position for at least three weeks, while two of them ruled America for at least seven. As is the case with the era these songs come from, there are a few underwhelming entries. But, there are just as many all-time great tracks that have transcended the limitations of any box that the mainstream charts might have once put them in. To score a 1 hit is an achievement that makes your career immortal in some capacity—these artists put in the work and got to the promised land. But, hey, what can you do?

Hmm, notwithstanding the comments already made about the Culture Club single, 18 of the top 19 singles listed here were certified Gold by the BPI during "Blue Monday" being the exception but I seem to remember Factory weren't interested in certification status at the time. Back then, Gold status meant k records, admittedly based on what was ordered rather than sold over-the-counter, but it's a bit surprising that OCC thinks only the top 3 singles managed to sell that figure. Either the OCC is under-estimating sales or record shops back in ordered way too many copies of the biggest-selling records - you'd have thought that they'd have learned their lesson as the year progressed. Why has the list of the biggest selling songs of been shortened to 40 songs when the previous 80s lists, , had 50???
