The University of Mississippi is attracting a lot of attention from their record breaking freshman class and growing number of students. With enrollment soaring and new essential campus buildings being built, the combination has caused some major concerns regarding parking on campus. With multiple construction projects going on at the Ole Miss campus, there has been major congestion in traffic as well as parking issues. Due to the lack of land, the administration needs to pick and choose what is most important for the campus. With three new residential halls being built, the university did consider building a residential parking structure.

Besides restructured parking options for commuters, some permit holders no longer will need to keep a hangtag or decal on their car when parking on campus. This change is made possible by license plate reading, or LPR technology that will scan license plates. Residential permit holders will continue to use parking hangtags or decals, as will those who fall in the parking categories of reserved, exempt, annual visitor, vendor and Purple Heart. For permitted vehicle owners who prefer to back into or pull through a parking spot, the department is introducing a unique, Ole Miss-branded vanity plate for the front of the vehicle. Those will be available for purchase when permits go on sale this summer. LPR technology also will allow faculty and staff permit holders to register up to two cars to an account so that they may avoid switching the hangtag when they use another car. Patterson noted that it will be important to make sure that vehicle and license plate information is correct when purchasing a parking permit through the Ole Miss parking website. Additionally, updates to commuter parking will be implemented in fall First, commuter parking categories will be divided into lots close to the middle of campus, known as Commuter Blue lots, and lots further away, known as Commuter Red lots. Next school year, the cost of parking permits will be increasing due to funding the new buses. The university is hoping the new buses will make students consider taking alternate transportation regularly rather than buying a permit. A parking structure would cost over 30 million dollars. So I think as long as we have somewhere for the students to go and we offer the transportation to get into campus, I think we can manage the enrollment growth without having to have a cap. Any vehicle with a UM parking permit may park in Commuter Red lots, which are near Oxford University Transit stops to help commuters get to the heart of campus more quickly. First, commuter parking categories will be divided into lots close to the middle of campus, known as Commuter Blue lots, and lots further away, known as Commuter Red lots. The new facility will provide additional capacity to support new facilities for housing and academics, said Chad Hunter, associate university architect. Due to the lack of land, the administration needs to pick and choose what is most important for the campus. This will allow students to get rides back and forth from the overflow lot. Verbal instructions from facility staff are for the safety and comfort of all Campus Recreation patrons and are to be strictly enforced. However, I do think that the long-term solution would be to intentionally limit parking even more, increase public transportation or alternative transportation options like bikes and have people park along the perimeter. Questions or concerns regarding parking must be brought directly to the attention of the Department of Parking and Transportation at or parking olemiss. So I think if they banned cars for freshman, it would make my life much easier if that decision was made, but it would put a damper on the growth of the university. Proper athletic shoes and clothing are required.
