While engine trouble codes are somewhat well understood these days, automatic transmission codes are still confusing many out there. One of the reasons for this is the lack of uniformity between different transmission systems, which often makes troubleshooting them somewhat tricky. This is a check engine light code that could potentially make your vehicle difficult, or impossible to drive altogether. The P code means that your transmission control module, the computer tasked with controlling your automatic transmission, has registered a problem with the torque converter clutch circuit. In other words, your torque converter is not functioning normally, and the cause is most likely a mechanical issue of some sort. One positive thing about this particular error is that its causes are usually benign. The torque converter is a crucial piece of any powertrain that uses an automatic transmission. The torque converter works by utilizing transmission fluid to transfer the power from the engine to the transmission. It consists of a pump , a reactor , and a turbine. The pump and turbine look very similar as they both feature metal fins fanned all around their circumference.

No matter how much experience you have working with cars, the Check Engine Light always causes a moment of fear. In this guide, we explain the meaning of the P DTC. We look at some common symptoms and show you what might be causing the problem. If you want to diagnose it yourself, we have some helpful steps to get you started later in the article. The P trouble code indicates that the Powertrain Control Module PCM detected an abnormal reading from the torque converter clutch circuit. Usually, the PCM goes through numerous checks and the reading needs to be abnormal for a specified amount of time before the light comes on. This code is considered generic and universal. The most obvious symptom will be the Check Engine Light.

Are you facing some problems with erratic shifting and you have diagnosed the P code? Well, if that is the case, then you are at the right place because there will be a lot to cover on this topic where we will learn how to tackle this problem. Having a problem like this can be a really frustrating thing to deal with.

Neither of these issues is easy to diagnose without taking the transmission apart. This is where the problem usually lies. Can someone give me a quick bullet-list to get to it? Maybe you should fix the EGR problem and then continue from there Plug the device into your car and run a full scan. The P code means that your transmission control module, the computer tasked with controlling your automatic transmission, has registered a problem with the torque converter clutch circuit. The car has k mi on it and has had P from time to time but it is now not driveable in hot weather without the code and associated slip. All the sudden in the past month a bunch of codes have been popping up with these 3 being the latest. The diagnostic problem lies in that there is no way to measure this pressure, but even if you could all you would see is low pressure. The VW Corner.

Modern torque converters are fitted with a clutch assembly whose sole purpose is to lock the pump side and the turbine side , thus allowing them to move at the same speed. Clearly something isn't right with the EGR, because the hose was sucking air like it should. I had purchased new torque converter and solenoids which were installed during rebuild. Let up on accelerator for a bit and its back to normal and accelerates properly. Timing chain is past due, i can hear the chain slack from 20 feet away. Once the computer sees the TCC slip it triggers the code and no longer tries appying the torque converter clutch. We also stock TCC solenoids for a number of European makes and models. Fortunately, these solenoids are very easy to test given that you can reach and remove them from the transmission. Good luck. This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Fixing this error should always start with a full diagnostic scan. Did not have rough idle or EGR code. The process of diagnosing the torque converter will differ from car to car. Sign up. Modified by ws6transamm6 at PM Modified by ws6transamm6 at PM
