A state of emergency has been declared for the whole island, while all nonessential travel to the popular vacation destination is being discouraged, officials said. Maui's Lahaina went from a historic resort town to 'war zone' after America's deadliest wildfire for a century. Once a lush green resort town on an island in the middle of the Pacific, Lahaina has now been reduced to ash and rubble. At least 96 people have died since the fast-moving blaze engulfed the north-west coast of the Hawaiian island of Maui on Tuesday, levelling the historic town and obliterating nearly everything in its path. Video footage comparing what it looked like in May shows the extent of the devastation. Boats docked in the harbour have sunk to the bottom while trees and grass turned different shades of charred black. Days after the inferno, crews of firefighters were still battling flare-ups, and cadaver dogs were sifting through the ruins in search of victims. Survivors and officials are grappling with the scale of the disaster. Officials have secured 1, hotel rooms for people who lost their homes and are arranging for rental properties to serve as housing at no cost to families, Mr Green added. More than 1, people had been taken in at emergency shelters.

As crews began to assess the damage from the deadly wildfires that killed dozens on the Hawaiian island of Maui, satellite images show the extent of the devastation. Massive blazes broke out and spread rapidly on Maui and the Big Island earlier this week, as strong winds generated by Hurricane Dora — a distant Category 4 hurricane traveling across the Pacific hundreds of miles south of the island chain — and dry conditions on land created an environment where wildfires can ignite and grow more easily, according to the National Weather Service. Officials said Wednesday that the exact cause of the fires was still unknown. The West Maui town of Lahaina, a popular tourist destination and commercial hub with a long and rich cultural history , was hit especially hard by the fires. Aerial video footage and satellite images captured by Maxar Technologies offered a harrowing look at the destruction. People dove into the water at Lahaina Harbor while trying to escape the smoke and encroaching flames on Tuesday.
