Persona 5 Royal 's Dr. Takuto Maruki is the game's true final boss, and the best villain in the entire Persona franchise so far. Though unassuming in his initial appearance, like so many of the characters introduced and expanded upon in this expansion of the original Persona 5 , there is much more to Dr. Maruki than first meets the eye. Persona 5 Royal makes multiple changes to the original game, beyond adding an expansion to the original story. The seven deadly sins are a recurring theme within the game, with certain characters and situations representing them. The game's character design and setting distinguish it from previous entries in the series, replacing Persona 4 's yellow-and-green palette with reds and blacks. As with Persona 3 and Persona 4 , its characters were designed by Shigenori Soejima. He also worked on the color scheme and overall visual presentation. In Persona 5 , some individuals have a distorted view of the world and the people around them. If this grows strong enough, they gain a Palace, a place in the Metaverse where their desires appear. Their distorted desires manifest from resentment towards certain people or previous trauma, and use the mobile application EMMA to artificially inflate their own ego by stealing the desires of civilians.

It helps that the villains in the series are just as memorable, seeming like insurmountable antagonists early on before players finally attain the means to take them out. As players progress through the story, they slowly uncover the intricacies of the villains' motivations and ideologies, making their eventual defeat all the more satisfying. Sometimes, these villains can be misunderstood figures who took their frustrations out incorrectly, while there are other times when these people are so incredibly evil that taking them out is the only course of action left to the heroes. Mitsuo Kubo is a pretty creepy character, stalking and asking Yukiko to hang out with her even though she had no idea who he was.

While exploring a palace you'll learn more about the ruler, how they see the people around them, and why they act the way they do.
