Coulson was Nick Fury 's right-hand man for many important missions and his liaison to the Avengers. He served as the primary operative in the Avengers Initiative following a Skrull Invasion of Earth in that led to the surfacing of Captain Marvel.

Unfortunately, this culminated in his death in The Avengers , when Coulson was stabbed through the heart. His death led the Avengers to put their divisions and differences behind them, and unite against Loki. Of course, the MCU is based on comic books, and as a result death never lasts long. Since then, Coulson's relationship status with death could best be described as "It's Complicated," with Coulson himself pretending he'd been shot in season 2 as part of a trick to manipulate Hydra. It had been foreshadowed throughout the season, with Coulson less than happy about being brought back as an LMD; it was something he'd explicitly forbidden before his official death in season 5. Still, the resurrected Coulson began to figure he had a second shot at life, and so in episode 6 he had quite an intense conversation with Agent May. She rebuffed him, telling him she couldn't go through it all again. I can't mourn you again. Coulson's decision to sacrifice himself was hardly a surprise; he'd always been willing to give himself up for the sake of the Earth, and even more so to protect his friends. What was more surprising, however, was Coulson's last message to May before he destroyed the Chronicom ship. Of course, this makes Coulson's sacrifice all the more emotional, because clearly he didn't want to go.

While ABC's Agents of SHIELD was initially a canonical show in the MCU seeing Coulson's subsequent resurrection after being killed by Loki, its status as part of the main timeline shifted over time as the series' connectivity continued to drift further away, so much so that the events of the show can't be reconciled with those seen in the films. Furthermore, Phil Coulson himself is referenced in the season premiere of Loki , but only his death, carrying the strong implication that his resurrection and the entire ABC series that followed Avengers occurred within a separate reality of the multiverse. In Loki's premiere episode entitled "Glorious Purpose", the God of Mischief's creation of a divergent and unapproved timeline gets him arrested by the Time Variance Authority after he used the Space Stone to escape the Avengers in While he was found guilty of committing a crime against the Time-Keepers sacred timeline, Agent Mobius M. Mobius saves him from his sentencing, conducting an interview to see if Loki could be of value to the TVA in his latest investigation. In his attempts to figure out what makes Loki tick, Agent Mobius plays recordings of Loki's life, starting with his recent defeat against the Avengers and the Battle of New York. While Loki claims that he was born to rule, Mobius counters that he certainly seems to lose a lot and that it might even be in his nature.
In the years since, Coulson was killed and brought back again and again, in one form or another. But just how many times has the dedicated agent died? Jackson's Nick Fury. He got to meet the superheroes who would later become the Avengers, including the one he grew up idolizing, Captain America. Sadly, Coulson didn't actually get to see the Avengers come together, because he was stabbed through the chest by Loki. His noble death served as an inspiration to the heroes, who then united to stop the god of mischief.
