Photinia thin red
The photinia thin red foliage is a beautiful red turning to glossy green once mature and in mid to late spring small white flowers appear. This Photinia is taller and skinnier than the Red Robin making it perfect as a screening hedge in an urban garden.
For hedging, plant photinias out 60—80cm apart —the closer together they are, the quicker they will fill the gaps to create the hedge. Allow them to grow for a full season before you start trimming them back to create a typical hedge shape. Prune once or twice annually to keep your Photinia tidy and to maintain its desired size. It's no slouch! More regular pruning will encourage new — stunningly red — growth. Fertilise at least once a year with some slow-release fertiliser, and some good chunky mulch around the base of the plants will also help to ensure good moisture and nutrient levels in the soil.

This is why so many Australian gardeners have come to love Photinias. Photinia have a reputation for easy care solid hardiness and will tolerate a wide range of growing conditions and even gardener neglect. Photinia is part of the rose family and it produces large numbers of small white flowers in mid to late spring. Photinias also produce small apple-shaped red fruits, which the birds love. But you need to be aware, especially if you have young children, that the leaves and fruits of some Photinia species may contain carcinogenic compounds. Photinia make great hedges for privacy and shelter, and the various hybrid varieties all have unique features that make them ideal for a range of different garden settings. Photinia robusta, as the name suggests, is drought resistant and works well as a windbreak growing up to 6m high. The question of Photinia robusta vs RedRobin simply comes down to what you want your Photinia to do: grow to become a tall windbreak or remain as a short hedge.

Red tip photinia or Fraser photinia is a broadleaf evergreen shrub that can also be shaped into a tree. Red tip photinia gets its name from the striking red color of its young leaves. It is often planted as a hedge or privacy screen. However, fungal leaf spot caused by the plants growing closely together in hedges makes the plants die out, so it's no longer recommended to plant these shrubs as a hedge. Red tip photinia needs good air circulation, low humidity, an inch of water weekly given at the base of the plant, and thrives in full sun, although it can tolerate full shade. It tolerates salt spray, drought, and alkaline soil. This plant has a fast growth rate, gaining 1 to 3 feet yearly and growing up to 15 feet tall at maturity. It should be planted at least 5 feet apart in the fall or spring. Its white flowers have an unpleasant odor.
